EMERGENCY FLOOD APPEAL (NIGERIA) 2022

At present, Nigeria is under heavy attack by flood, the scale of the flood is hard to comprehend; thousands of people are left to suffer untold hardship leaving countless individuals homeless and destitute. Hundreds of people have lost their lives including women and children. Structures shrouded in flood, including all healthcare facilities. Roads have been completely cut off, and those that want to evacuate are unable to run to safety without outside help, so have no choice but to stay and await their fates.

As responsible citizens, it behoves us to treat this situation as it is by making concrete and deliberate efforts to salvage the situation by first:

Making shelter available outside of the affected region

  1. A team of Medical volunteers to attend to their medical needs

  2. Provide Food, Water, and Sanitation

  3. Relocate individuals affected starting with the most affected and vulnerable

For this reason, we call for this EMERGENCY FLOOD APPEAL.

By donating to this appeal, you will be helping the EBDF provide vital emergency aid such as Clean Water, Food, Shelter, and healthcare to affected communities.

EBDF will use the donations to deliver life-saving aid, we urgently need more funds to reach more people.

Please donate and make a difference.

The risk of waterborne diseases is extremely high, people have been swept away due to heavy currents of the water, and those that cannot swim or are not strong enough to hold on to something are drowning at an alarming rate!

In September, the National Emergency Management Agency and Nigeria Hydrological Agency informed Nigerians that the Lagdo dam operators in Cameroon had commenced the release of excess water from the reservoir on September 13, 2022.

The released water Cascades down into Nigeria through River Benue and tributaries, thereby overwhelming communities that have already been impacted by heavy rainfall.

This water forces its way down to the sea, causing lots of damage. The most impacted areas are the Niger Deltan Wetlands, the largest wetland in Africa and the third largest in the world.

It is the last part of land before the sea. It sits slightly above sea level with brittle clay soil which makes the area vulnerable to erosion. It is an essential subsystem of the general ecosystem with so many functions like purification and sustenance of ground and surface water resources on earth. ENGENNI in Ahoada West, Rivers State/Bayelsa, Nigeria, is located here and has been seriously impacted.

Engenni in Ahoada West and the entire Orashi region are the worst hit for the following reasons:

1. The region is like a basin that receives all the water as it pours down from the north before emptying into the sea

2. Activities of oil multinationals and oil spills that have contaminated and destroyed the ecosystem

The people are left to suffer untold hardship leaving countless individuals homeless and destitute.

The north of 62 towns was sacked and countless structures were shrouded in flood, including all healthcare facilities.

The entire arable land has been submerged, and over 600,000 livestock have been lost. Not even one fish farm survived.

Villages have been completely cut off, with rescuers struggling to reach them; individuals have been battling to get to those that are trapped, endangering themselves in the process with more rain expected as the dams continue to spill over, and water levels continue to rise.

Essential requirements are needed: Food, Clean Water, Medication, and Shelter.

We are calling on the public, authorities of Nigeria, and international assistance to provide humanitarian aid.

By donating to the FLOOD APPEAL, you will help EBDF provide vital emergency aid such as Clean Water, Food, Shelter, and Healthcare to affected communities.

EBDF will use the donations to deliver life-saving aid directly or through local partners.

We urgently need more funds to reach more people.

Please donate and make a difference. Any amount of donation would be highly appreciated!
